The pressure of genetic disease on Iran: Strategies towards prevention
In recent years, genetics has emerged as an important factor in public health. Application of improvement in genetic programs could reduce the impact of genetic disorders and birth defects in the population through primary, secondary and tertiary prevention, regarding the confidence, autonomy and reproducing rights of people. Writing the medical genetic curriculum is the first important program of prevention strategy, which focused on public and professionals education in genetics, genetic testing and screening, premarital and prenatal counseling and testing and control of environmental cofactors. This program is effective and completes when population-based research assess the positive and negative predictive value of it. Public health functions evaluate the effectiveness of this curriculum and ensure the quality of genetic health program in Iran. So, urgent genetic program needs to be prepared for disease prevention, which translates genetic knowledge and technology into disease prevention.
